Mental Health Tips For Physical Therapists

Have you ever felt so overwhelmed by the demands of work and life that you teeter on the brink of either exploding in a fit of rage or simply giving up? We’ve been there more times than we can count. As cliché as it may sound, the one tool that has consistently pulled me back from the edge is meditation.

Let’s explore some mental health tips for physical therapists, and how a quick 10-minute practice can shift your entire mindset.

Finding Your Space

First, try to carve out a quiet space where you can sit with your eyes closed for 10 minutes. I know this is easier said than done, but trust me, it’s worth the effort. A peaceful environment sets the stage for effective meditation.

The Practice

Focus on Your Breath

Begin by breathing in and out slowly through your nose 10 times, focusing solely on your breath. It’s normal for your mind to wander to the multitude of stressors you’re juggling. When this happens, gently bring your focus back to your breath. As a PT, I love doing 3 sets of 10, but this also helps me to fully calm my mind and hone in on my breath.

Set Your Intention

After you’ve settled your breath, set your intention for the day. My personal favorites are:

    • “May all beings achieve happiness.”
    • “May all beings avoid suffering.”

There are countless ways to set your intention, so choose one that resonates with you. These two have been particularly powerful for me.

Cultivate Compassion

Think of people in your life whom you love deeply. As you breathe, either silently think or say out loud:

    • “May my loved one achieve happiness.”
    • “May my loved one avoid suffering.”

Then, extend this compassion to others in your life:

    • First, to those you think well of but aren’t as close to.
    • Next, to those who may currently be causing you stress.

Research suggests that cultivating compassion in this manner can ease your emotional reactivity. By wishing happiness and the avoidance of suffering for someone who is frustrating you, you liberate yourself from the negative emotions tied to them.

Reaffirm Your Intentions

To wrap up, repeat your intentions for the day and take a few more deep breaths. This helps reinforce the calmer state of mind you’ve achieved.

The Benefits for PTs

For many PTs, work and family demands are at their peak. This simple 10-minute meditation can be a game-changer, providing the reset you need to tackle your day with renewed focus and calm. By incorporating this practice into your daily routine, you can better manage stress and enhance your overall well-being.

Give it a try and see how just 10 minutes of meditation can make a significant difference in your life and practice.
