Who is Dr. Howard J. Hillstrom?

Howard J. Hillstrom, PhD received the B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering and the M.S. in Biomedical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Worcester Ma. in 1978 and 1980. He received the Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA in 1989. Dr. Hillstrom has directed the Gait Study Center at TUSPM from 1988 to 2005 and then passed the baton to Dr. Jinsup Song, DPM, PhD. Dr. Hillstrom directed the Leon Root, M.D. Motion Analysis Laboratory (LRMALab) at HSS from 2005 to 2021. He designed a state-of-the-art version of this laboratory which is located at 510 East 73rd street in New York City. Dr. Hillstrom has become the Senior Director of the LRMALab from 2021 till present.

His main research activity is in the biomechanics of posture and locomotion and the underlying neuromuscular physiology of healthy, athletic, and pathological individuals. Exploration of how lower extremity structure and function are related to human movement with special attention to osteoarthritis is a central theme in his research. Dr. Hillstrom has conducted over 95 research studies in predominantly lower extremity pathomechanics and has over 133 peer reviewed publications disseminating his work.

His research has received funding from NIH, NSF, VA, OREF, Arthritis Foundation, as well as several other Foundations and Corporations. He has served as an inventor of 8 different biomechanical technologies that have received patents or are patent pending. He also serves as the Chief Technical Officer of Biomed Consulting, a company that designs, develops, and commercializes such technologies.

Who is Dr. Christopher Neville?

Dr. Christopher Neville is a Professor at Upstate Medical University and Director of the Industry Research Office within the Research Administration at Upstate Medical University. Dr. Neville has bridged the role of clinician, principal investigator, industry consultant, and active industry partner across the last 20+ years of working within the academy. Currently Dr. Neville teaches, guides funded research, and supports industry partnered research growth across Upstate Medical University.

A physical therapist by background and biomechanist by training Dr. Neville has run an NIH funded biomechanics laboratory focused on translational research ranging from orthopedic tendinopathy to concussion injuries and falls in older adults. Although most of his work has been in medical device validation he has also worked in the development and testing of biologics and validation of patient centered clinical outcomes.
