Hiking Woman Walk With a Hiking Backpack in Spring Green Forest Explores New Fantastic Places Around the World, Surrounded by Nature. Female Hiker Crossing the Forest

Warmer weather means the season for outdoor activities is finally here! While the nation’s Capital can be one of the busiest areas in the US, it is also home to some of the best hiking trails on the East Coast.

Between a busy schedule and today’s sedentary work from home lifestyle, few things benefit our body more than movement and some fresh air.

Before we dive into our Top 5 hiking spots in the DC Metro Area, here are some additional health benefits that can come from a nice hike:

  • Lower your risk of heart disease.
  • Improve your blood pressure and blood sugar levels.
  • Boost bone density.
  • Build strength in your hips and legs.
  • Strengthen your core.
  • Improve balance.

So clear up your schedule this weekend and get ready to tackle one of our Top 5 favorite hiking trails:

  • Bear’s Den Park Trail: although it is a shorter hike (1.7mi), we love this trail because it is the perfect mix of challenge and fun.
  • Raven Rocks Trail: this is one of the most popular trails in our area. It is longer than Bear’s Den, with nearly 10 miles of trails, but not as challenging.
  • Old Rag Mountain Loop: as one of the more difficult hikes, Old Rag provides steady climbs and breathtaking views of the Virginia mountains.
  • Three Ridges Hike: one of Virginia’s most popular hikes, it features waterfalls and countless vistas of the Appalachian Trail.
  • Billy Goat Trail: if you’ve ever been hiking in the DC Metro area, you’ve probably done this hike. While it is just a moderately-difficult trail, it provides spectacular views of the Potomac River.

What are some of your favorite hiking spots in the Northern Virginia area?
