Dr. Ben Smith-Birley, Clinic Director



Dr. Ben Smith-Birley, PT, DPT

Education:
Ben earned his Doctorate of Physical Therapy from the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in August 2020.  He holds a BS in Exercise Science from University of South Carolina. While at MUSC, Ben participated in a pilot study in Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) and its effect on lower extremity motor units.

Specialties:
Ben treats orthopedic injuries, supports post-operative rehabilitation, provides postural re-education, and teaches powerlifting. During his doctoral studies, Ben became interested in a series of studies exploring Olympic-style weightlifting and its effects on bone density in postmenopausal women and low bone density men. He enjoys coaching proper technique with patients who have never done a deadlift and watching their confidence improve as they get stronger. Athletes who know their way around a gym are kindred souls—he enjoys fine-tuning already experienced approaches to pumping iron.

Fun Facts:
Ben enjoys reading, weightlifting, golfing, attending baseball games and concerts, and entertaining his two cats. He collects vinyl records and cassette tapes. He recently married his wife during Nationals Park’s first in-game wedding ceremony. 

Dr. Ellie Stephens, Physical Therapist

Dr. Ellie Stephens, PT, DPT

Education: Ellie graduated from the University of Lynchburg with her Doctorate in Physical Therapy in May 2024. She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Virginia with a Bachelor of Science Education degree in Kinesiology. Since graduation, she has also completed continuing education with the Herman and Wallace Pelvic Rehabilitation Institute and is Dry Needling Certified. Currently she is working on obtaining her Pregnancy and Postpartum Corrective Exercise Specialization.

Specialties: Ellie believes that rehabilitation should focus on the whole body in order to achieve the highest level of function and reach activity goals. She enjoys working with patients during pregnancy/postpartum and perimenopause/menopause and treating conditions such as Incontinence, Urgency, Diastasis Recti, pelvic pain, and low back / SIJ pain. 

Fun Facts: Ellie is a loyal UVA fan despite growing up in a Virginia Tech household. In her free time, she enjoys cooking, trying new restaurants in the DMV area, reading, and traveling with friends/family.

Dr. Matthew Strange , Physical Therapist



Dr. Matthew Strange , PT, DPT

Education: Matthew graduated from West Virginia University (WVU) with his Doctorate in Physical Therapy in May 2026. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Richmond, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology with a minor in psychology and performed research studies investigating how the brain interprets and processes others’ expressions of pain. During his time at WVU, Matthew represented his home state of West Virginia in the APTA’s National Student Council. He also completed an 8-week clinical internship working with professional basketball and volleyball athletes in Lugano, Switzerland.

Specialties: Matthew believes that everybody can benefit from physical activity and exercise. He encourages anyone who will listen to find a movement practice that they enjoy and can perform regularly, be it walking, wind surfing, or anything in-between. He is most passionate about helping active, motivated individuals work through aches and pains so they can perform the activities they love without interruption. He is primarily interested in treating orthopedic and sports conditions, post-operative management, and injury prevention in athletes of all ages.

Fun Facts: Matthew is a Mountaineer through-and-through, though his favorite professional sports teams reside in Pittsburgh. In his free time, he enjoys playing his saxophone, running and hiking with his dog, training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, powerlifting, building Lego sets, and attending as many live music events as he can find.

How to Find Our Clinic at Ballston Quarter Mall

IMPORTANT: Our clinic is on Level M2, which is directly accessible from Parking G3. Please note that Parking G1, G2, and G3 are reserved for monthly parking only. In the video, we park on G4.

Enter the Ballston Quarter garage at the intersection of N. Glebe Rd. and N. Carlin Springs Rd. Another entrance is on Randolph St.

Take the elevator or stairs to Level M2 (Parking G3).

From the elevator or staircase, go straight, then take a right. Walk down the corridor and continue right through the sliding doors. Follow the outdoor walkway; we are the second door on your left.
