Who is Dr. Joe Godges?

Joe Godges is an Adjunct Professor of Physical Therapy in the Division of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy at the University of Southern California. His role at USC involves training therapists in clinical residency and fellowship programs. Additionally, Dr. Godges serves as a consultant assisting APTA Orthopedics (AOPT) with integrating its guidelines into clinical practice, both domestically and internationally.

Dr. Godges began his PT experience as an officer in the U.S. Army in 1980. Joe is certified as a manual therapist, Rolfer, and PNF practitioner. His professional development also includes earning an MA in counseling psychology. He was among the first 29 individuals to receive board certification as a clinical specialist in orthopedic physical therapy in 1989. He has recertified in 1999, 2009, and 2019. Over the past 35 years, he has dedicated his career to training physical therapy residents and fellows in clinical residency and fellowship programs for Kaiser Permanente, USC, and other institutions in the U.S., Kenya, and China.

From 2008 to 2017, Joe served as the ICF-based Clinical Practice Guidelines Coordinator & Editor for the Academy of Orthopaedic Physical Therapy of the American Physical Therapy Association. During this period, 15 CPGs were published in the Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy.

Dr. Godges has been the lead author or contributing author of over 20 peer-reviewed journal publications on several topics in orthopaedic and sports physical therapy.

Joe was an intercollegiate athlete in the 70s at Pepperdine University and has put in effort in continuing to move well on running trails, ski slopes, golf links, and ocean surf.
