Working From Home Pain-Free

work from home

Does this working from home position look familiar?

Truth us, we know that with this “new normal” and many of us working from home, new neck pains and back pains are GOING to happen.

But, how can we prevent them? And how can we find relief once the pain has already set in?

If your new work from home routine has your body begging for relief, give these tips a shot:

Start with your desk

Make sure that you have a dedicated workspace (aside from your couch).

Make sure that your legs are not squished together and that your knees aren’t pressed up against any surface. Your desk should be set at elbow-height when you are seated.

Consider getting a monitor

While laptops are great for portability and convenience, one of their main problems is that the screen is connected to the keyboard.

This causes us to tilt our heads down to look at a screen that is sitting at elbow-height. Getting a monitor, or external keyboard, is an easy solution to this problem.

It will encourage your head to tip upwards, reducing the amount of strain on your cervical spine.

Support your spine

Let’s face it: the “new-ness” of the Work From Home dynamic means that many of us didn’t have top-notch office spaces set up at home.

Most of us didn’t have physician-approved office chairs or fancy ergonomic desks. Adding insult to injury, many of us aren’t sure of how long we’ll be working from home, making us weary to invest time and money to build a top-notch home office.

That’s why we recommend that our patients start by getting a back-support and investing in a standing desk and/or affordable but ergonomic office chair. (Your couch does not count!)
